Capturing memories with the Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 is so much fun. From the fun pastel colors to the quirky Sanrio and Minion designs, the Mini 8 caters to anyone who loves anything pretty and chic. After all, who could resist this cute, compact toy (and of course, the equally adorbs Instax model)?
When taking a photo with your Instax Mini 8, excitement builds up about how it will turn out. But that's also the tricky part of using an instant camera.
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 isn't your typical film or digital camera. Unlike regular cameras, taking photos with an instant camera requires much more discipline and precision. You have to get it right the first time because you can't just take shots over and over. Otherwise, you'll end up with shots that are either blurry or dark.
Got a new Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 camera or will buy one soon? Make the most of it and take awesome shots with these eight tips and tricks.
1. Take a pic within a pic
Have you seen any of your friends' Instagram posts that look like a photo within a photo? You can pull off those cool Inception-style shots with your Fujifilm Instax camera, too!
This instant camera photography technique works best while traveling, as you need breathtaking landscapes or architectural wonders as your shot's backdrop.
Simply snap a photo of a scenery and when the photo has developed, shoot the scene again holding the polaroid picture. Even better, hold the Fujifilm Instax print in a way that fits the background, as though you're putting two puzzle pieces together.
2. Keep enough distance from your subject
Be careful not to get too close or too far from the person or object you're taking a picture of. If you shoot too close, the camera will struggle with focus, and a blurry pic will come out. If you're too far, you'll miss the opportunity to snap a great photo because it'll turn out black.
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 works best if you're within the right distance from your subject. Because its built-in flash has an effective range of around 2 ft. to 9 ft., you can get Instax photos with just the right focus and brightness as long as you stay in that range.
3. Put the subject at the center of the actual photo
Wondering why you can't get your subject at the center in your Instax photos?
The viewfinder on the Instax Mini 8 is located on the camera's top left portion rather than right above the lens. This is why the resulting photos often show the subject at the lower left part even if it looked centered in the viewfinder.
When shooting with your Fujifilm Instax Mini 8, locate the center (indicated by a circle) and then slightly move it down before snapping away.
4. Hold your Fujifilm Instax horizontally for landscapes and group shots
When taking pictures with an instant camera, people would instantly hold it upright. It isn't the only way to take beautiful Instax pictures, though. Why don't you try taking horizontal pics?
Shooting horizontally with your Fujifilm Instax camera is perfect for landscapes, cityscapes, and groups of people. For a more interesting effect, you can even hold the camera in a slanted position while taking pictures.
5. Vary your angles
Get out of the box when shooting with your Fujifilm Instax Mini 8! Rather than just capture moments and scenes straight on, try different angles to add depth to your Polaroid pictures.
Taking a pic of a tall structure? Add more height to it by shooting from a low angle—bend or crouch down if you must! Not only will you get an awesome shot, but you'll also get some leg muscle workout. ;-)
6. Use natural lighting
As much as possible, shoot outdoors rather than indoors when you're using a Fujifilm Instax camera. For example, when taking a picture of your family, friends, or workmates, better do it outside.
This way, you'll get natural lighting that often results in gorgeous Instax pics. Oh, your subjects will also get their dose of Vitamin D while having fun with your Instax photo-ops.
7. Avoid taking Instax pics in the mirror
Mirror selfies are cool when you use a smartphone or any digital camera. But it's different with an instant camera that sets off the flash indoors. Your snaps will turn out dark when you shoot in the mirror.
So before you use your Fujifilm Instax Mini 8, remember to avoid taking pics directly in the mirror, window, TV, or any surface that reflects light.
8. Choose the right brightness setting
The Fujifilm Instax Mini 8's flash modes are a lot easier to use than a DSLR's manual mode. The instant camera automatically recommends the best brightness setting to use for a particular shot by lighting up the corresponding lamp (arranged from brightest to the least bright):
- Indoors, Night
- Cloudy, Shade
- Sunny, Slightly cloudy
- Sunny and bright
For beginners, it's best to follow the Fujifilm Instax camera's recommended brightness setting. If you use a different mode, your picture might come out too dark. So before you snap, turn the brightness adjustment dial to the camera's suggested setting marked by a lit lamp.
But if you've been using your Instax camera for some time now, you can choose your preferred brightness setting if you want a brighter or darker image.
For example, when you want a darker Instax photo for a dramatic effect but the camera recommends the Cloudy setting, you can ignore it and just turn the dial to the Sunny mode instead. On the other hand, when you want your image to be much brighter, choose the Cloudy flash mode.
Lastly, you can set your Fujifilm Instax camera to the Hi-key mode to make your polaroid pictures brighter and softer.
